I got off the phone with a business owner about a potential website redesign. As we were going over what they wanted to be done, a sentiment was communicated to me – and I have heard a different version of this same sentiment hundreds of times:

“It’s an old site, whatever you think we need is fine, you are the professional…”

It’s not okay. It’s a little frustrating. Its a red flag that you may not be taking what a web/logo/brand design can REALLY do for your business.

When a design is well thought out, has planning and dreams behind it– it can facilitate making your business soar πŸ¦…

The counter to this is that I need to ask questions. It’s true, and we do. But 19 times out of 20, most of the questions are answered with vagueness in this particular scenario. The whole project turns out to be a vague gallop through a fog that yields a sub-par design that does nothing for you or me. We are missing hair, and the client probably feels like they had a less than ideal experience. Lose-Lose πŸ™β€β™‚οΈ

It’s going to be a lot of work. You might get frustrated, eat a lot of ice cream, and throw paper against the wall. But by putting in the work ahead of time, guaranteed you will be in la-la land of candy canes and unicorns once the project is over πŸ¬πŸ¦„

Before contacting potential designers – do the following:

Set aside a day devoted solely to your brand and business. I say this for the more significant design requests like logos, brand work, and website designs.

We will use your website as an example. Sit down and act like a customerβ€” role play.

Who is this customer I am portraying?


How old are they?


What are they looking for?


How do they find me?

Now you are Umberto. Be Umberto. Google search for your service or product.

Do you show up?

No?

Who does?

The ones showing up are most likely killing it with their content and SEO. They are clear about what they do and their services. Are you clear?

Umberto is now going to go to your website through search or go to your URL. What is the first thing Umberto sees?

Be as objective and somewhat cut-throat as you can be.

Is it a wall of text with 20 navigation items? You might find out you don’t just need a redesign; you need a full content overhaul. Brand tweaking. Clarity.

What would you do differently to get Umberto to where he needs to go? That answer is what you need to do.

What kind of feeling are you getting by interacting with your brand? Bland? Wordy? No feels? That’s what your public audience most likely feels. Now you know you need brand work.
